REPORT & RESULTS: Holme Valley Contest 2017

Holmfirth Civic Hall played host to the fantastic Holme Valley Contest last Sunday (21st May, 2017) which saw Hade Edge, Skelmanthorpe Prospect & Thurlestone Band taking gold in their respective sections.

Competing in Section C, Thurlestone Band arguable came away the happiest of the bunch as they returned to the test piece arena for the first time in nearly 50 years. MD Graham Bates told A4B: ‘“It’s 14 years since I took over here and it’s been a long journey, but through hard work and dedication we now have grown into a band with over 30 regular members, fantastic community links and a great social life. The band has taken a very pro-active approach to encouraging young members to develop and “spread their wings”, with many going on the play with the Yorkshire Youth Band and National Youth Band of Great Britain, and it was great to see young Flugel Horn player, Josh Bailey, take the award for “Best Soloist”, and younger still Claudia Bowen win the “Youngest Player” prize.”
